Checking in to places on Foursquare seemed like a chore to me right when I first tried the service. You reach a place, and the first thing that you’re supposed to do is “check-in” on Foursquare just so you get random internet points, and to show off to your friends that you are an interesting person.
Looks like a lot of people felt so too, forcing Foursquare to split up its app into two – the original app remains, but the company also launched a new app, Swarm, which has the ability to check-in, just like the Foursquare app in its current form, but which also shows friends nearby, so you can get in touch with them, plan hang-outs with them and more, all from within the app. Sounds extremely interesting, and takes the creepy aspect out of the location sharing service.
The company will be updating its main app, Foursquare, completely rewriting it to remove the check-in feature. The main Foursquare app will then just focus on discovery and exploration, sort of like Yelp.
Still interested? Here’s the app on the Play Store.
